The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major honors show draws close, one notices a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
