The Compassion of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Land the Job That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a companion. Because my travel mate was considering pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, found a table, and started talking to people eating there.

Beside me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that after dark. The engineering student walked over to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his identity, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in multiple respects. I would never have had the confidence or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York resulted in a job in Zurich where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
