England and Wales Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales find themselves placed in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their famous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a pool once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the groups play out in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Major Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's history.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
