RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
