A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
